TREE CARE & PLANTING GUIDES

TREE CARE AND STEWARDSHIP

Stewardship…

…is a caretaking relationship with the environment and ecosystem around us. When we give the trees in our community the care and support they need, it helps them in turn take care of us–through the many benefits to our health and spirit that they provide!

Planting the trees is just the beginning…it’s tough to make it as an urban tree, and providing trees (especially young ones!) with the care and maintenance they need to survive and thrive over time is critical to building a healthy urban forest!

Trees in cities face many challenges — and street trees, in particular, are vulnerable to dry and compacted soils, road salt, weed overgrowth, vehicle damage, and vandalism. However, ALL newly planted trees  — whether they’re on the sidewalk, in your backyard, or in a park — need an attentive steward to help them reach maturity. TREE CARE TIPS

WATERING
A young urban tree needs 10-15 gallons every week from May-October for the first 2 years. Encourage roots to grow deep with heavy slow soakings once a week (instead of giving them a little water every day).
MULCHING
Spread mulch around your tree to look like a donut, once or twice a year. Never pile the mulch up touching the base of the tree- this can invite rot & pests. Proper mulching will help retain moisture, control weeds, keep the soil loose so roots can breathe, and add nutrients to the soil!
PULLING WEEDS
Sometimes, unwanted plants might still grow through the mulch. Pull them out when you spot them to reduce competition for water and space in the tree pit.
Want to plant flowers or other plants around your tree? Go for it! Be sure not to plant vines, ivy, or other water-hogging plants. For more info, check out our detailed PNPP tree care and planting guides:
